47. Career Update UK (24/03/2016)
Test for overseas doctors will be strengthened, says GMC
Read
“The General Medical Council (GMC) has said that it will strengthen its test for international doctors who want to work in the UK.Changes are being made to the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test after recommendations from an independent review commissioned by the GMC.

The test is taken by international medical graduates to assess whether they have the knowledge and skills to practise in the UK. It consists of a written knowledge test and a practical assessment of clinical skills. In 2014 two research papers said that pass marks for PLAB should rise to make sure that those doctors met equivalent standards to UK trained doctors.

Under the new assessment, which will be introduced from September 2016, doctors will need to undergo a broader knowledge test and a more thorough practical assessment, which will reflect real life consultations in the UK health system, the GMC said.Doctors will face a limit on the number of times they can sit the new test and a limit of two years to apply for a licence to practise in the UK after passing. The changes also include:
  • A fully revised practical assessment, including more scenarios, which are longer and have been redesigned to more accurately reflect real life consultations
  • New practical scenarios and questions that will assess candidates’ professionalism and understanding of ethics as well as their clinical skills…
In 2014 the GMC said that it would develop a single examination for all medical graduates wishing to practise in the UK which would replace the PLAB. The medical licensing assessment would replace the PLAB test “at some point in the future,” the GMC said.”
