 Why people consult a Doctor?

When people consult a Doctor the primary reasons for doing so include:

1. Proper assessment of the illness through history, examination and investigations

2. Proper discussion about the possible diagnoses and treatment

3. Appropriate treatment after a diagnosis is made

4. Proper discussion about the nature, benefits, side effects and complications of the treatment, and the potential benefits and risks of no treatment

(Not all conditions need treatment, especially with multiple medicines or complex surgery. It is important to investigate properly about the illness first before embarking on treatment.)

People consult a Doctor as he/she is the Specialist in dealing with illnesses and expected to meet the professional standard as mentioned above.

The Specialist Doctor is called a Consultant. The Consultant’s job is to provide consultation (discussion and advice), not to dictate treatment to the patients.
