Cardiology Alert!!!

Digoxin use linked to increased risk of Death

♥ Results published in the European Heart Journal in 2012.

♥ Researchers from the University of Kentucky reported.

♥ Study population – 4,060 patients on digoxin treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF), an abnormal heart rhythm.

♥ About half of the patients were prescribed digoxin while the others were given different heart medications or treatments.

♥ For every six patients on digoxin for five years, one would die who may not have otherwise died.

♥ Deaths from any cause increased by 41%.

♥ Deaths from cardiovascular causes increase by 35%.

♥ Deaths from arrhythmia (other than AF) or irregular heart rhythm increase by 61%.

♥ It does not necessarily mean that the drug itself is responsible.

♥ It does not necessarily mean that digoxin should no longer be used.

♥ This evidence should be used to guide your clinical judgment while weighing the benefits and risks of using digoxin in a particular patient.
